Stories of Rim - Rebirth

The man continued to read his book. Even as Mina had a small outburst. It was just after Flux and Laros had managed to calm her down that the man took from his pocket a strip of ribbon. Carefully he laid it across the center of the book, his thin hands marking the page.

The book was small, a pocket edition of a tiny work, so it easily fit into the breast pocket of the man's lab coat. The title was visible for a second as he pushed it to the bottom of the pocket. “The Worth a Soul” flashed in metallic leafed lettering.

He stood and stretched an arm out to shake the soldier hand.

“Good work Captain, I think we'll be fine from here,” he said smiling softly.

Then he approached the group.

“Sorry for the delay,” he said adjusting his wire glasses, “Don't get much time to read around here, it appears that I have stolen a minute too many for that hobby.”

Tilting his head, the bald man looked past the three in front of him. A little ways off was Leila peering down a white corridor.

“I'm Lawrence Trivelmen,” he supplied focusing back on the people before him, “we'll each introduce ourselves better in a moment. First, I ought to collect Ms. Etti. I'll meet you in moment, if you want you can start heading down the hall, swing that left and stop by the elevator.”

He gestured towards the corridor, before quickly walking after Leila.

“Ms. Etti!”

From behind her, Leila could hear Mina grumpily mutter her defeat, "Yeah, yeah, okay." She faintly registered a new voice speaking to her companions as she swung the dogtags around in circles. “Good work Captain, I think we'll be fine from here. Sorry for the delay. Don't get much time to read around here, it appears that I have stolen a minute too many for that hobby. I'm Lawrence Trivelmen; we'll each introduce ourselves better in a moment. First, I ought to collect Ms. Etti. I'll meet you in moment, if you want you can start heading down the hall, swing that left and stop by the elevator.” Leila poked her head down a bland white corridor and frowned at its boringness. “Ms. Etti!” Leila turned at the sound of her name to see the bald man walking towards her. "Oh hi. Finished your book? What did you think of it? I personally thought that the author put too much effort into making it suspenseful. I mean, that big reveal about his parents? Soooooo obvious!" Leila commented conversationally, stowing the tags back in a pocket. "But anyways," She flapped her hand dismissively and immediately spoke again, "I expect that you're here to escort me to the ship's commander? I was told that I was direly needed to help with the current navigational trajectory." Leila smiled expectantly.

Lawrence furrowed his eye brows a bit, confused at Leila's demand, but he recovered quickly. The faint smile dancing back onto his face.

“Ah, yes, the ship commander... We'll I'll take you to him as soon as I can, we were actually headed that why to begin with. Now, if you'd follow me,” he said gesturing with his arm to the rest of the group.

He turned and quickly strode up to where the others were, expecting Leila to follow in the wake of his rippling lab coat. Slowing down as he got to the others, his eyes quickly counting as if he was expecting another to have slipped away in his absence.

“I must apologize for the lack of decor,” he nodded at the white walls which where only interrupted by stripes of silvery piping, “sadly that's what happens when you mix a hospital and military vessel. The only color we have is blue scrubs.”

Now visible when looking behind Lawrence was what was wrong with his skull. A tattoo was embedded in the back of his head. It looked kind of like a dark color flower that someone had attempted to put into stain glass, so it was too fractured and complex to resemble the real thing.
