An Eclipse of Hope

Long ago, magic and science worked together in harmony, but with the rise of civilization, magic fell into the shadows.

It is now present day, and magic has become obscure. A ritual conducted under the eclipse causes creatures known as Phantoms to be born from people who fell into despair. Science is powerless to stop them, and conventional weapons are useless against them. They take on disguises of their former hosts, blending in with their surroundings. Most do not notice the difference, making the Phantoms a truly terrifying threat.

Those who held onto hope during the ritual that affected the entire world gained access to magic, most opting to use special rings known as the Wizard Rings to channel their mana for combat. By holding onto hope, these modern day mages trapped their Phantoms inside them, turning them into Inner Phantoms, which give these mages their mana to use magic. These mages are the only people who can combat the Phantoms effectively.

Our story begins 6 months after the ritual that became known as “The Sabbath”, in a city known as Royale City, with a young man arriving, carrying a bag of glazed doughnuts.

Rules:
1) All site rules apply.
2) Cursing and extreme violence are okay, as long as they don’t get TOO graphic.
3) No metagaming or godmodding.
4) Character limit will be 2.
5) Some NPCs will be controllable by players as long as they stay minor. (Example, a cafe owner)
6) I will allow some players to control villains and such later on. It’ll make this more exciting.
7) If you read this section, write “Final Hope” in Other.

[+] Mage types
There are 3 specific types of ring mages, each differing in power:

Basic Mages: Most of these tend to have the same suit (an apprentice like form with varying gem colors, and a large claw weapon on the left arm.) and do not (often) dabble in elements. As such, they have larger mana reserves so they can cast more spells.

Elemental: Elemental Mages uses the elements to fight off their foes. They are the most common mage type, and are often constantly evolving through outside means. Most mages of this type are taught to use their magic by a Master Mage, who has mastered at least one element to the point that they can not evolve any further. Elements available are listed under Rings.

Elemental mages are no different from Basic Mages as far as how they replenish mana. Due to the drain caused by elemental rings, however, Elemental Mages are seldom seen carrying more than a few spell rings into battle.

Archetype Mages: An Archetype mage is unique. They are, in rough translation, people who are artificial magic-users. They use a mechanical transformation device (which, usually is something attachable to the user’s body) that operates on its own type of rings. Due to the lack of mana in their own body, they can't use the rings of an actual mage (except under certain circumstances.)

The transformation devices they carry are designed so that they can hold mana to use for battle, but cannot replenish it naturally like other mages. In order to obtain new mana, the device absorbs the remains of Phantoms after they are defeated, allowing the mana to remain.

Being an Archetype is Dangerous. This is because the Phantom inside the belt creates a contract with the user. More often than not, this contract involves something along the lines of "Feed me phantoms, or you die." Very rarely is it something else.

Typically, Archetype mages carry rings based on the animals featured on their Phantom. This could range from three to five types of animals, which don't operate like Elemental mages, but rather act like spell rings which grant the user a type of power.

[+] Drivers
Drivers are special magical devices made using a mixture of Science and magic. It acts as a converter, turning a person's mana into magic. The main part of the converter is the Grimoire Stone for Elemental and Basic Types, and the Arche Turner for Archetypes. The former are often found inside the Hand/Symbol Authors that are present on the Drivers of Elemental and Basic types. The Arche Turner is usually in the left slot on an Archetype’s device. Drivers can be anything from belts to gauntlets to a staff (although good luck explaining why you’re carrying one of those to most people).

[+] Rings
Making rings is a type of art that takes patience and skill. While in ancient times, there were merchants who sold pre-made ring bases, but modern mages do not have this sort of convenience. The simplest way to make rings is to make the Golem familiar, which itself can be tricky. Golems are known to be affectionate toward their creator and help craft things for them. Traveling mages who collect rings always have a Golem handy.

Apart from crafting, from metal, the ring base, one must have a magic stone. Elemental stones come in various colors, but the most common type of magic stone for special powers is a solid orange color. It is, however, possible to make use of elemental stones, as crafting them into a smaller shape (transformation rings have a noticeably larger stone) will take away much of the elemental power and simply turn it into pure magic. The visual effect of the power may have some leftover visual effect to it, such as ice types leaving behind snowflakes, or lunar stones presenting a flash of light.

Some of the more common elements and corresponding stone colors are as follows:
- Fire = Solid red stone
- Water = Solid blue stone
- Wind = Solid green stone
- Earth = Solid yellow stone
- Ice = Light blue stone
- Nature = Dark green stone
- Solar = Reddish Orange Stone
- Lunar = Dark blue Stone
- Storm = Lime green stone
- Light = Solid White Stone
- Darkness = Solid black stone

These are the commonly accepted colors associated with these stones, but based on their locations and what other stones they are grouped with, the coloration may vary. There are instances where the stone may even have a specific color but has the element of another. A transformation ring can even feasibly be made using a plain orange magic stone, and then painted a different color for personalization, without elements ever factoring in. Typically, these Transformation rings look like their user's mage suit helmet, but in rare instances this is not the case.

While it is true that one cannot simply know offhand what kind of power a magic stone will hold, there is a certain philosophy ancient mages had that suggests the stone "talks" to the crafter telepathically, unbeknownst to the crafter. As the crafter works away at the stone to shape it, it is as if a notion crosses their mind, suggesting what it might be capable of doing. By the time the ring is complete and the cover is placed, they have a basic understanding of its abilities. Or at least, a notion of what it might do - only when testing the ring does one truly understands its purpose.

Archetype magic rings are something trickier to explain. Standard magic rings have magic inside of them, while Archetype magic rings are separate from their magic properties. Said magic properties are instead stored inside of the devices which the rings operate on, meaning that new rings cannot be implemented - the user cannot obtain new rings that were not created for the device to read. It's a strange setup that isn't fully understood by modern day mages.

Adding to the confusion, while in certain situations, the rules change somewhat, and Archetypes are suddenly able to use regular magic rings. It's believed that this may be due to the amount of magical energy swirling around them, confusing the device to think that the magic ring is part of its existing arsenal.

[+] Familiars
Familiars, known by some as "Plamonsters" for their use of plastic materials, are small mechanical animals based around mythical creatures, which aid mages in various ways. They use a small fraction of the summoner's mana to act as their own personal life force.

Familiars primarily act as spies in order to survey a situation from a safe distance, with the summoner carrying some kind of item, such as a crystal ball or tablet, that allows them to see what the familiars see.

Familiars have the ability to combine to take on new forms, although it is of little functionality and often used just for show. Due to their small stature, they aren't exactly combat-ready.

The way that familiars are created requires more specific forms of magic stone shaping. As no specific type of stone is really required, they can all be seen in a variety of colors.

Garuda, Unicorn, Pegasus, Kraken, Gryphon, Golem and Cerberus are the most common types, but others exist.

He HATES people who are cynical, and if somebody is feeling like they're filled with despair, he'll do his best to cheer them up.
Appearance: straight, dark brown hair that reaches the top of his neck and drapes over his right eye, asian skin, brown eyes (his right eye occasionally shifts to purple with a more lizard like appearance). Flaws: If he's trying to get someone to look back to bright side of life, he'll likely focus on ONLY that. He also believes that everyone has a bit of good in them, which CAN come back to bite him. He also needs quite a few calories to be able to cast magic, preferring doughnuts to replenish them.
Other: Final Hope.

Aside from the Inner Phantom needing to be a mythical creature (A wolf is a real, existing animal after all), it looks good. Accepted.

Personality: Similar to her elements, Sorano is a peaceful and quiet girl, absorbed in her studies and comfortable in her nonsocial life. Perhaps she is the living embodiment of the calm before the storm; she doesn’t let people get close enough to her to know. She can plan well and vision how things will turn out, and is very balanced in terms of analytical behaviors and creativeness.
Appearance: Sorano has navy colored hair that is cut asymmetrical, the longer side on the left. It is above her shoulders. Her eyes are a deep brown, almost black, and her skin is pale. She wears dark clothing including an oversized black sweatshirt and purple trim, short black shorts, and knee-high black socks with white sneakers.
Mage name (typically these are some synonym of Magician, but can be anything. Names not allowed: Magician, Witch, Warlock, Sorcerer, Wizard, Wiseman, Beast, Howl): Silence
Mage type: Elemental
Mage suit description (if you have one): See attached picture
Driver (as in, what is it disguised as?): The black earring in her left ear.
Elements (if a basic mage or an Archetype, just put N/A. Max 2): Ice and Lunar
Hopeful item (as in, an item that keeps them hopeful. Can be anything.): She has a letter from her dad, telling her that he’ll be home in a few days, but from the looks of it, it’s pretty old.
Weapon: A khopesh about half her size. See attached.
Flaws: Sorano doesn’t work well with groups or other people, and her anxiety affects a lot of her ability to do things with people. Plus, she doesn’t like talking at all, and that can lead to some communication issues.

Ooc: real quick question about inner phantoms; first can they have a good relationship with their host or is it always a negative one. Secondly can they influence/act through their host at all?
